Course Outline:

Lesson 1: Introduction to Keyboarding

In this lesson we discuss how the course is structured and what will be covered.  You will also learn some helpful tips or habits to establish as you learn how to use a keyboard.

Lesson 2: Assessing Your Current Skill Level

In this lesson you complete the process of assessing your current skill level.  This is required so that your own personal typing goal can be set.  This will allow you to work on increasing speed and accuracy.

Lesson 3: Posture Counts!

How you sit at the keyboard can influence your speed and accuracy. More importantly, it affects the strain on your body.  Lesson 3 covers the correct ergonomic positioning of your body to avoid the aches, strains and fatigue associated with improper positioning.

Lesson 4: Home Position and Learning Letters I, T, O, R, N

Being able to type with all 10 fingers requires stretching out from the home position to reach other keys.  Most fingers are responsible for one or more keys.  In this lesson we learn the importance of keeping hands in the home position as you practice stretching and reaching for other keys.  Focus will be on finger movements, always returning to the home position.

Lesson 5: Learning Letters H, E, P, W, M, C, G, Y, Shift

In this lesson we learn additional key strikes from the home position. Focus continues to be on finger movements, always returning to the home position. Learning the location of the keys will increase your speed and accuracy.

Lesson 6: Learning Letters U, B, V, X, Q, and Z

In this lesson we learn the last few letters of the keyboard.  Reaching for letters not in the home position should become second nature.

Lesson 7: Numbers and Modifier Keys

This lesson takes us to the number keys on your keyboard. Practice accessing keys that have more than one function, or that are part of a specially dedicated numeric keypad.
